In December of 1986, a group of local friends made a bet. Whoever drew the short straw would have to don a Santa suit and waterski across the frigid waves of the Potomac River. It was just meant to be a silly dare among friends, but the one who drew the short straw had so much fun as Waterskiing Santa that he decided to do it again next year—and this time, the local news showed up.
Today, Waterskiing Santa has become a local tradition in its own right. Folks line up along the river every December 24th to watch the show unfold and cheer as Santa glides by. Find a spot along the water anywhere between Founders Park and Point Lumley Park to watch Waterskiing Santa pass by at 1 p.m.
