“You’ve got to try Mezcalero!” That’s what one reviewer has to say after visiting this new Mexican restaurant here in Alexandria. “I definitely recommend trying this place out.” adds another. “If you’re reading this you need to try this restaurant.” “This place rocks.” “You will not be disappointed.”

The Alexandria location of Mezcalero hasn’t been open long but it’s already got its share of enthusiastic fans. Of course, there’s more to their ardor than a generic recommendation—they’ve quickly identified some must-try menu items. Queso fundido is a number-one choice: a spicy chorizo, oaxaca and chihuahua cheeses, and peppers with corn or flour tortillas.Quesadillas are another favorite, and a kid-friendly one at that!

Like any great restaurant inspired by the foods of the Mexican streets, Mezcalero has an extensive list of cocktails, too. Margaritas range from a classic recipe to more unconventional flavors, like hibiscus or maracuya., while their signature cocktails include options like “el diablo” (with tequila, ginger syrup, lime juice, and cassis) or the spicy prickly pear (with mezcal, lemon juice, and agave).

Whether you order a cocktail or beer (or non-alcoholic alternative) to accompany your queso, fundido or carne asada, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the Mexican streets from your first bite to your last.
